Feeling Fancy

Feeling Fancy--- so many people ask me each day, "How are you?" I often answer with, "I'm feeling fancy!" To me, feeling fancy means not holding back my most loving, most elegant, most celebratory self. It is putting on my Sunday Best, but, from the Inside Out. We have the opportunity each day to put on our best attitude along with our best clothes.

I remember when my closest childhood friend, Marcie had breast, bone, and brain cancer, she would still get up each morning, light a candle, put a gorgeous wig on, and meticulously apply her makeup.  She looked amazing even though she was ill.  I visited her during chemotherapy and asked why she got all dolled up to go to chemotherapy.  She replied, "Rituals are important to me.  It is what I have always done.  I feel great when I look great and vice versa.  I'm feeling fancy and healing myself.

I encourage and prod you gently and assuredly to put on your Sunday Best, from your Inside Out.  What are you waiting for?

Blessings,
KJ Landis

"My goodness! You did it! So hip-hip hooray! That's nothing to sneeze at, as Horton might say!"

My mother always used to tell me that if I didn't toot my own horn, nobody else would. Yes, I agree. There is a difference between boasting and being proud of your accomplishments. Whatever we see through from the beginning, to middle, and then end is a wonderful thing. Be proud and know that follow through is a gift and a talent in life, but it can also be learned and cultivated. My mentors and teachers have always said that suiting up and showing up is half the battle.

What is your sanctuary ? What or where do you relax in and feel most at peace? The bath, the church, temple, mosque? Yoga class? The gym? Your head? The sauna or pool? Nature? Your home? Before we get frazzled in the chaos of the every day over scheduling, I encourage you to clean out your sanctuary in every way so that it may be spacious to receive in any way.  A few moments to breathe in and out in the place you feel warm, peaceful, and comfortable can start the day off right and end the day off right.  What do you think?  Let me know...

"Whatever you do, do it well, do it you!"

We hear often, "Do you." This is the way friends and family encourage us. The encouragement to be unique and stay on our own path is also found throughout the ages. Do I want to be a sheep or do I want to be the shepherd? Do I want to stay true to what I believe and know? Yes! I do. How about you?

You are so beautiful and special in your own way that no one can take that away from you. When slavery was in the US, the thing that kept the slaves alive the most was their inner strength, their thoughts, their heart, their faith, their beliefs.

My yoga teacher says to let no one steal my peace. That which I truly know to be me cannot be taken away. When I share my most shiny self with others, my most authentic self, I have the opportunity to stay true to who I am.

I want to hear from you!

"May your lemons be tangy, your limes always zippy, and all of your cookies be quite chocolate-chippy."

Now, finally we get to talk about food! I see Dr. Seuss was a real food eater! He understood the value of lemons and limes! He probably researched the benfits of chocolate! Just kidding...but this quote gives a blessing to all who read it and it is a sort of farewell blessing in the original meaning. For me, well, being a nutrition researcher, I want to share with you the health benefits of lemons, limes, and chocolate. Besides, they are found in almost every culture in kitchens around the world!

Lemons are in the citrus family. Here are some benefits:
  1. Lemons are quite acidic (sour in taste), but create an alkaline response in the digestion. The enzymes used to digest acidic foods are alkalzing. This is good for immunity response and prevention of disease.
  2. Lemons are full of vitamin C, which works at preventing colds and flus.
  3. Lemons are great liver cleansers. Add some to your water to liquify the bile and get things moving for elimination.
  4. Lemons are good for treating colds and flus if you get one.
  5. Lemons reduce appetite. If on a lifestyle change where you are eating less processed foods and finding cravings impossible to deal with, eat lemons like candy and add to everything. Even the skin has essential oils which smell amazing and also curb appetite.
  6. Lemons kill intestinal worms.
  7. Lemons break up kidney and gall stones.

Limes are also in the citrus family. Here are some benefits:
  1. Limes can be used for treating scurvy.
  2. Limes have antioxidants which are good for oxygen supply and for the heart.
  3. Limes essential oil is used for focus, studying, and an increase in energy.
  4. Limes have lots of vitamin C.
  5. Limes can kill harmful bacteria on hard surfaces when cleaning with them.
  6. Limes are a good source of potassium.
  7. Limes are an appetite suppressant.

Chocolate is from the cacao plant, which was originally found in South America. Here are some benefits:
  1.  Chocolate, if dark and low or no sugar, has antioxidants which fight or prevent hypertension and heart disease.
  2. The good fat in chocolate helps with memory decline.
  3. Chocloate helps with fetal growth, which is a good reason women crave chocolate when pregnant! The body knows...
  4. Chocolate improves athletic performance.
  5. Chocolate helps with menstrual cramps.
  6. Chocolate improves mood.
  7. Chocolate has properties which release the feel good hormones in our brain, serotonin, and dopamine.

The lists above are by no means exhaustive. Please do your own research. You may find many more food facts in my first book, Superior Self: Reaching Superior Health for a Superior Self. Available wherever books are sold and on line. Click here to order!

Blessings,
KJ Landis

"Smile high! Smile low! Smile everywhere you go!"

I work with a charming Spaniard named Jose. When I first met him years ago, he walked and talked quickly, with lots of natural energy and vibrancy. His smile was brilliant and honest. I told him, "I love your smile." He replied, "It's yours."

I never forgot his words. I think about those words when I am having a blah day, or just going through the motions of my errands and responsibilities. The power of those words, the gift of his smile to me, meant everything to me in that moment. Jose may not read this blog, or even know his impact upon my life, but that's what we humans can be and are to each other: everything. Imagine what your smile or gentle gesture may mean to another person, especially if they are feeling fragile or vulnerable. I think we all do kindnesses that we do not even realize, and that gives me hope even during the dark times.

What moves you to feel better than before? I want to hear from you!

"Wherever you fly, you'll be the best of the best. Wherever you go, you will top all the rest."

I don't think we must be the top. That means folks are less than you in their ways. Rather, I believe we must perform to the best of our abilities at any moment, knowing we can always improve. Sometimes just suiting up and showing up is winning.

When I saw Oprah complete her first marathon at age forty, I decided right then and there that when I turned forty, I would be mature enough, and have enough mental strength, endurance, and power to run a marathon. So, a day or so before my fortieth birthday I ran and completed my first marathon. (Since then, I have completed sixteen marathons.)

My daughter was a toddler at the time. When she saw the crowd, music, balloons, and fanfare as they announced my name crossing the finish line, she thought I won the marathon, taking first place! I had a medal, tee shirt, and food as gifts too! Her believing I won made it so in her world. The facts and the beliefs worked together in assisting me in accomplishing my goals. They are powerful tools. Since then, every time I get near the end of a race, when I hear my name, see the balloons, and music is blaring, I feel like I have won. I get emotional and teary eyed. I feel immensely grateful for my heart, arms, legs, and life. Thanks, Oprah.

"Topping the rest" may be topping your performance yesterday. Now, my daughter Sage is 12 years old and participates in Olympic Weightlifting. One day while riding in my van with her friends from the club, they told me they liked the sport because they don't compete against each other. They compete against their last lift. All training and meets are for the purpose of getting stronger. They even changed the word for the events from competitions to meets. That word is inclusive and builds community. They are meeting up with other like minded individuals for the support in their chosen sport.

I want to hear from you!

Dr. Seuss and Me #14

"And will you succeed? Yes indeed, yes indeed! Ninety-eight and three quarters percent guaranteed!"

In the last quote, #13, I spoke about how kids, especially teens, need encouragement in order to succeed. Well, adults need encouragement too, our whole lives in fact. As young adults, we may change careers often, or not know exactly what we want to do for our career or job. This can create anxiety and stress, so we do need some support.

I myself have had many jobs and many careers. Currently, I wear many hats. In the daytime, I am an author, a life and wellness coach, a personal trainer, a mother, wife, and exercise enthusiast. In the evenings, I work as a server in a busy hotel restaurant. I still need encouragement from my mentors and friends.

Success cannot be defined by wealth. I struggle to meet my bills every month, yet my life is filled with abundance and richness that cannot be measured. What about the other one and one-quarter percent in the quote above? What is that referring to?

I believe it has to do with the gift of free will. We can make smart choices and we can also make stupid decisions that affect our success in many areas of life. I have seen a gentleman who had everything, a long time committed partner, a one month old healthy child, a roof over his head, and a loving community around him, make a choice that changed everything. His free will guided him to have an affair when the baby was one month old, and the double life, lies, and deceit created an exhausting existence. He lost everything, because the affair was taking up too much of his energy, and he could not get to work on time. He lost his job and began drinking alcohol with regularity. So, that is one example of the other one and one quarter percent.

A life-long love of learning stimulates our lives in many ways and gives us energy. We all have walked into a party and felt the good energy in the room, watching somebody master the room with their positive vibes, great stories, and love of life. That is contagious. It is also contagious when we walk into a room and feel down immediately, but we don't know why. Negative energy thrown off by somebody in the room is also permeating the party. I suggest making a polite exit. In order to be successful in all of the ways that the word means tells me I must honor all facets of my life and my goals.

What do you think about the above quote?
I want to hear from you.

Blessings,
KJ Landis

My lucky number is 13, so I have a good feeling about this quote.

"You'll be on your way up! You'll be seeing great sights! You'll join the high fliers who soar to high heights."

Hmmmmm. Encouragement in any form is welcome, and as a young person just getting on their way in life, it is really important to hear statements like these. Whether it comes from a parent, sibling, older relative, school teacher, or religious counselor, we need encouragement every day and in every way. Teenagers especially need encouragement, as hormones, everyday tasks, and romantic relationships challenge friendships. Between the school life, the social life, the family obligations, and chores at home, teens are under a lot of stress.

Please be gentle and caring while at the same time holding your teens to high standards. Communication is key. Of course, telling kids I LOVE YOU multiple times a day and hugging often can bring them the support and confidence they need to soar to high height!

I want to hear from you!

"If you'd never been born, then you might be an Isn't! An Isn't has no fun at all. No, he disn't."

What if if we had never been born? Sometimes I think about my parents' decision to have me. My mom said all five of her children were happy accidents. If she had said, "No more kids!" after two or three or even four, I wouldn't be sharing my life with you all right now.

I meet friends and family who tell me the miracles of their birth. When I had children of my own, not only the decision and conception were miracles, but the pregnancy, labor, and delivery were the most fun and also intense experiences I have ever had. As soon as I popped one child out I said aloud, "Let's do it again. Can we do it again?" The magic and science unite when having children. Our species procreate, and it is natural and normal. At the same time it feels so unique and abnormal, a heightened sense of existence.

I love the way Dr. Seuss plays with this thought. Maybe he was thinking about what if he had not been born. Then he would miss out on all of the fun that he was giving us in his life, and all of the fun that he was having creating these amazing books, which are whimsical in their writing and a gift to all who read them for generations.

My favorite Dr. Seuss book is the one I was given when I first had my first child, Golden. It is titled, Are You My Mother? This book was responsible for my son speaking aloud with words by age 7 months old. And yes, we have had so much fun during our lives together because he is here on earth.

I want to hear from you! What is your favorite Dr. Seuss book and why?

Are Your Affirmations Working?

1/9/2017

Picture
Lots of people have goals, wishes, desires, and dreams. They even go as far as writing them down. For those folks who use affirmations, maybe they are not seeing results in the time frame or manner they want. This is my point of view on shifting to affirmations that work!

First of all, look at your affirmations. They may not work for you because they are too general. Writing, "I am losing weight," is too broad. Instead, try writing, "I am losing 10 pounds of fat and retaining my muscle mass by 6/1/17." Does that make sense?

My coaching clients also are busy modern people who sometimes forget to write down the 3 affirmations daily and repeat them aloud all day. This can hold us back from creating the future dreams and cultivating them to happen now. We need to write down daily and repeat aloud multiple times a day in order to create new neural pathways in our brain. With time and repetition, the new belief system will be set in place, and then our lives will model the affirmations which we created. Repetition and commitment is key.

We have to know when to drop an affirmation. Sometimes people are so comfortable with the three affirmations they have created, that they forget to release the affirmations once they have a realized and actualized what they wrote down. Then it is time to release the affirmation and create a new one.

I always write down my affirmations as if they are happening now. That way I am creating the life I want to live now. It doesn't matter whether I believe it or not because with time and repetition my belief systems will change. I am saying yes to me.

Finally, if we have too many affirmations our energy will be distracted into many directions. That's why I always keep it to three affirmation. That way we can focus what is really important in our lives now.

I hope this helps! I want to hear from you!

Blessings,
KJ Landis

Roses or Thorns??

1/9/2017

Picture
Today's blog comes from the inside of a fortune cookie. On the slip of paper inside the cookie it states, "You can either complain that rose bushes have thorns---or rejoice that thorn bushes have roses." ~unknown author

Our life is like the fortune too. We all know the glass is half full, but with modern media, it is more fun and dramatic to point out the bad things and gossip about it. We gossip about celebrities gaining or losing weight, gaining or losing lovers, whose baby daddy is cheating, etc. This is actually taking too much of our precious time here on earth. These are first world problems, really. "What dress looks better on me? The red one or the silver one? Oh, I don't know what to wear!" Some folks would to love to be in that dilemma. Choices are a privilege.

The rose bush provides pollen for the bees, food for birds and insects, and the thorns protect the species so it can procreate and we can smell their divine aroma for generations to come. I am rejoicing that the thorn bushes have roses to celebrate. Let us celebrate our lives in this manner. Each day, we can smile, even when not feeling so good, or we have a job that is not our dream job. Hey! We woke up! We actually have a job! For me, when I feel like my waitressing evening is starting to become a disaster, I put a litle glitter on my temples. Then, when I pass the mirrors in the restaurant, I notice my sparkling self! I cannot have a bad day when I have glitter on!

What do you do to shift your point of view? How do you honor your awesome self, rather than your grumpy self? I want to hear from you!

Blessings,
KJ Landis

New Year Promises

1/8/2017

Picture
When I think about New Year resolutions, I feel failure seep into my bones. The very wordresolution means to do over and over again. How about changing the language to New Year promises? In my world, promises mean I am worth it, I am committing to myself. It is a big Y-E-S.

In order to keep focused on New Year promises after the honeymoon is over, write down goals as if they are happening right now. Repeat them aloud multiple times a day. Repeat every day. Here are some examples:

-I am earning $1,000,000 in my bank account by 12/31/17.
-I am eating the most nutrient dense and healthy foods that give me strength and flexibility.
-I am breathing deeply and counting to 10 before reacting.

When we change the language, we change the thoughts. Eventually we change the belief system. Then our life begins to model the new belief system. Our brains begin to develop new neural pathways which are in alignment with the new thought patterns.

Your New Year, New You Promises are to be realized sooner rather than later with a mindful and present attitude.

Blessings,
KJ Landis

Are You Out of Control?

1/8/2017

Picture
Our modern day living circumstances allow us so many conveniences. Instant living can also make us instantly stressed. We are busier than ever, and the to-do list never ends. We are at a low to medium stress level all of the time. Our ancestors had lots of down time and bursts of high anxiety, while hunting or being hunted.

How do we know if we are close to or over the edge? Our stress may be out of control if we experience any of these symptoms increase:

-extreme hunger or weight gain
-extreme loss of hunger or dramatic weight loss
-inability to sleep
-sleeping much more than normal
-increasing alcohol consumption
-unexplained irritibility
-new to nail biting
-withdrawing from social events
-fighting with friends and family more
-driving faster than normally
-loss of concentration
-memory loss

Be sure to speak with your healthcare practitioner. In addition, we can turn to the ancient ways in order to prevent and find relief from chronic stress. I encourage my life coaching clients to practice a variety of restorative practices. Some helpful options include:

-yoga
-meditation
-Tai chi
-Pilates
-walking in nature, or hiking
-sauna, steam room
-swimming

The body needs a time out daily. Giving yourself the gift of silence and self-care is exponential in its healing benefits. You deserve it!

Blessings,
KJ Landis

2017 Predictions in Wellness

1/8/2017

Picture
Here are my feelings about the year in health trends that will pique the public's attention.

In 2017, we will see the trend towards a grain free, unprocessed real foods consumption to continue.

In my workshops on living holistic wellness, we focus first on nutrient dense, easily absorbed foods. In 2017, the interest in home made, fermented foods will continue. In my home, we have been substituting bok choy for kale in a lot of fun preparations, including bok choy chips! I think this will be the next superfood to hit the media circuit.

In these modern times folks are educating themselves about their own wellness and taking self care, rather than relying on health care. With the internet and published, real clinical studies, regular folks have the opportunity to discover nutritional truths for themselves.

In the coming year, we will see more restorative movement studios open up all over the USA. People are becoming increasingly aware of the need for balance and blending different parts of their lives together. Restorative movement like yoga, pilates, tai chi, meditation, etc. push the reset button.

In 2017, as a health community, we are moving towards a healing perspective rather than pushing everything to its limits.

Connect the Dots...

We all have struggles and challenges while on earth. Why do some folks just barely survive, while others thrive? Some people even seem to super-survive. The keys to healing are multifaceted, multilevel, and unique to each individual. Here are 5 ways to connect the dots, so that we may not remain paralyzed in mind, body, or spirit.

1. Write a letter to those who have done you wrong. It doesn't matter whether you are ready to mail it to them or not. The act of getting it out on paper is a great release of the past.
2. Use the Negative Thought Pot. Any fears or self deprecating thoughts that pop up, write down on a strip of paper. Put the negative thought into a clay pot and set on fire. The act of physically destroying the paper reminds us that we aren't owned by that thought. The next time that thought pops into your head, you can say, "I destroyed you! You no longer have power over me."
3. Reflect to figure out if similar dramatic or traumatic event are followed by the same reactions. If so, find a trusted loved one to role play and act out different solutions to the past problems.
4. Reach out and ask for help. Being vulnerable does not equal being weak. It is actually a beautiful and strong way to rise up from hurt.
5. Share your successes! People want to support you and truly want to give you a pat on the back when you grow and do well.

Blessings,

My Story is Not Sexy...

My story is not sexy, but it is authentic and true.

Five years ago, I lost 50 pounds of fat rather quickly while on a grain free, sugar free eating protocol, along with hormones. I only ate wild caught fish and seafood, as well as lots of vegetables. The number 1 helpful tool for me was drinking a gallon of water a day. When I drink lots of water (with lemon) I can identify whether I am truly hungry, or just socially and emotionally hungry. Plus, I learned that the way fat leaves our body is through perspiration and urination. More water in means more water out.

Afterwards, I studied everything I could from cutting edge scientists, fitness professionals, podcasts, doctors, and authors. There was no way I was going to allow the weight and fat to come back.

Friends and family began asking me to help them as well. And so I did.

For me, this was a springboard into the Paleo, primal, high-fat, ancient ways of eating real, whole foods. Eating a high-fat very good fat diet, and grass fed, wild-caught everything, as well as drinking a gallon of water and sleeping 9-10 hours a night has kept me living like our ancestors. I do yoga and meditation daily, I walk a lot and hike a lot. I also waitress in the evenings, so I lift heavy things and walk six hours an evening. I live by the 80/20 rule.

I teach people why we should not eat anything that has eaten grains, how to give up processed foods and sugars, and how to have fun while doing it all. My workshops are always free because I reach seniors and lower economic communities.

After helping others through my workshops, participants have come back to me with stories of their healing from diabetes, gout, high blood pressure, eczema, allergies, fat loss, and renewed energy.

I am passionate about helping others achieve what I have, as somebody who at age 51, changed their life for the better on many levels. If I could do this journey, so can you.

Blessings,
KJ Landis

Dr. Seuss and Me #11

Sometimes the messages from Dr. Seuss are really clear and to the point. Sometimes we have to read betwen the lines. They are always silly, colorful, and fun though, and this is why his work has been cherished for generations.

"So be sure when you step, step with care and great tact. And remember that life's a great balancing act. And will you succeed? Yes! You will indeed!"

Okay, so this quote feels like I am in church, and the pastor has just laid a big message upon the crowd with her sermon. Wow! Was Dr. Seuss a philosophy or psychology major? I am so impressed with his therapy skills. It reminds me of the film Finding Nemo, which was full of adult jokes slyly placed inside a children's movie. Remember the line, "Are you my conscience?" Dorrie said this when she was in the dark and the only light was from an angler fish.

Stepping with great care and tact does not mean to lessen your worth and power. It guides us to be gentle with others' souls and hearts. We never know what someone else is going through. I watched my mother reel into a cashier at the supermarket when I was a little girl because she rang up some items at a higher price than advertised. To my mom, the world was against her, out to cheat her, but to the cashier, it was a simple finger slip up. What my mother didn't know was that the cashier may have had some personal issues going on that were heavy and may have placed some fuzz around her clarity during her work day.

"Life is a great balancing act." I say to balance may be some more pressure to be perfect. What if we used the word blending instead of balancing? That feels like a more attainable goal to me. And, as always, Dr. Seuss leaves us with a positive affirmation. Yes! We will have positive outcomes if we say yes, yes, yes, and practice living with gentleness toward others.

I want to hear from you!

Dr. Seuss and Me #10

I must admit, I am having so much fun meeting the challenge of 3 blogs a day using Dr. Seuss as my writing prompt. I don't know how or why the muse pointed me into the very back of the drugstore to the dusty bottom shelf where I found the book, but Hallelujah! Here is the quote for now:

"Today was good. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one."

Dr. Seuss reminds us not to take ourselves so seriously all of the time! Even if you are in a serious business, you can inject fun, joy, humor, and generosity of spirit into every day. We all make mistakes. Does that mean we have to be sullen and beat ourselves up about it? No! Shake that monkey off your back!

At the end of each day, write down one thing that was good, fun, or that you are grateful for. After a few weeks, your little notebook of goodness is a testament to how wonderful and fun your life is! Seeing the words on paper in your own handwriting is more effective than typing the grateful or fun moments because it is a mind and body connection and communication. I actually hand write my books on simple composition notebooks that I purchased at the Dollar Store. I actually didn't know anything about typing, social media, or website creation when the muse worked like a mosquito with its high pitched zzzzzzzzzzing in my ear!

When the student is ready, the muse will appear! Having fun along the way and acknowledging our fun is contagious! We all love being around positive, fun people. Even if it isn't natural for you, you can accept the goodness around you. You can fake it! I smile at strangers every day at work, even when I'm having a so-so day, or a bad day. When they smile back at me, a genuine and real smile comes back from me to them. It is contagious!

What did you do fun today? I want to hear from you!

Blessings,
KJ Landis

Dr. Seuss and Me #9

"If you never did, you should. These things are fun and fun is good."

Ah, the joys of routine and convenience. They make us feel safe. Routines in our society have become rituals. I thoroughly adore the way I make my morning coffee, and pour ever so slowly the boiling water over the grounds in my Melitta filter. I always pour the water counter clockwise, for some reason. I measure out two tablespoons of raw, heavy whipping cream over the black coffee and watch the swirls of marbled browns emerge into just the right homogenous shade for me.

Am I boring, playing it safe to make my coffee the same way every day? Or am I finding sacred moments through everyday living? I choose to see my morning habit as the latter. That does not mean, however, that I don't want to shake things up and have fun too! I love to try new coffee houses, hiking spots, and I keep a running list of restaurants, movies, and musicians that I want to experience. I have a dream of traveling off to some exotic place that I have never been before with only a purse or backpack. I fantasize of having that freedom to buy whatever I need as I encounter the need. I want to travel with only the clothes on my back, acquiring and discarding as necessary. To me, that would be fun and good.

Taking risks and experiencing completely new things that are out of your wheelhouse may be scary, but also fun. Your point of view may shift completely. Yippee! You may let go of baggage, and believe me, we all have baggage. What would your life look like if you had a day off? Have you ever had a secret day off? You know what I mean...get ready for the day, leave the house and do not go through the usual routine. Nobody knows, but you. What would that secret day off look like? I would love to hear from you after you muse upon your secret day off, thinking about trying new things and having 100% fun. This is for you. You deserve it. When I do something completely out of the ordinary, even if it is small, I feel exhilirated, refreshed, and ready to take care of those around me with more love and care. Why? Because I have taken care of me and nurtured myself out of the routine.

I want to hear from you!

Blessings,
KJ Landis
