What is Bioindividuality?

Are strawberries good or bad for me? Should I drink coffee for enhanced performance? Is whole wheat good or bad? What about butter? I'm confused about meat and eggs, as they were deemed bad, then good, and now bad again. What should I eat and when?

Does this sound like the conversation in your head when you are at the grocery store or when preparing a meal? There are so many new studies coming out that dispel the old dogma of the advice from the medical community from the past 70 years. We must look at the funding source of the studies to see where the bias lies. And we must see how many people were studied, if in a clinical setting. Finally, we must see how long the studies were carried out.

When it it comes to food, there are general agreements. Dark, leafy greens are good for us. Eat brightly colored vegetables, and buy organic when we can afford them. If eating meats, consume grass fed and grass finished, pasture raised options. Wild caught fish and seafood is generally considered healthier for us than the farmed variety.

Within in those parameters, however, we must look at the individual chemistry of each person consuming the food to see if it is suitable for their body. This is called bioindividuality. For example, if I encourage my client to eat tomatoes for the vitamin C and phytochemicals, but they break out after eating them, then perhaps for his or her individual body chemistry, he or she shouldn't eat tomatoes. If he or she is are suffering from an autoimmune disease and is on an autoimmune protocol, one should avoid night shades and therefore should not eat tomatoes because tomatoes are part of the nightshade family.

If if there is an adverse reaction to a food, no matter how healthy it is, we must listen to the message our body is communicating to us. It's not rocket science. It's bioindividuality.

Coffee helps performance when running or lifting weights but if it gives me the jitters, makes me sweat uncontrollably, or makes my heart race and I feel super anxious, perhaps I may not be the type to have coffee before my work outs. We must also be aware that the body changes over time. When I was in my 20s I could have 8 cups of coffee daily, even before bed, and fell asleep just fine. Now, in my 50s, if I have coffee past 6 pm, I will be up until 4 am without sleep. Our bioindividuality shifts as we age. We must honor ourselves or suffer the consequences.

I hope this helps you on your wellness journey. It certainly has helped me!
Blessings,
KJ Landis

Yoga is More than Exercise

Yoga is a mindfulness practice at its core. Pure yoga, the word yoga, means union. The union of mind and body. When I'm focusing on my breathing in yoga or meditating afterwards with my number meditation, I literally focus on letting go of the worldly things that bug me on a daily basis. I let go of the inner critic: she says, "I'm too fat, too thin, not ripped enough, my scars are ugly therefore I'm ugly, I cannot wear short shorts or swim wear unless I cover it with an elegant sarong, what are people thinking about me..."

Mindfulness allows me to let go. Afterwards the reactions to others' negativity and my inner critic is subdued. I say to myself, "I'm perfectly beautiful with all my scars. God made me. I'm a work in progress like everybody else."

My regular practice of mindfulness, and then of being present with myself and my flaws has been so helpful for my self esteem and body image in my head.

What about you? Any thoughts on yoga?

The Mysterious...

Two years ago, one of my elder brothers passed away. My brother Danny perished from a fast acting, fatal pulmonary disease that has no definitive cause and no cure. Our entire family felt blindsided and lost. I found my solace in cleaning.
When I flew back to Pennsylvania for the funeral service, I stayed with my cousins in the home where I was born and raised. I practically begged them to allow me to clean the wooden floors before the memorial meal, which was to be held there. My emotions poured forth into the rags, and tears mingled with the lemon oil as I rubbed the wood shiny.

There. Done. It was late. I was tired. The funeral was the next day and we all needed to get some rest. My coping technique made me feel a tiny bit better.
Every stroke and swipe of the rag also allowed me to reflect back to a few days earlier in San Francisco, where I had a spiritual experience relating to my brother’s soul beginning the transformation out of his body. I will explain further.
I was in my powder room on a typically chilly, foggy, San Francisco day in the late afternoon. All of the windows and doors were closed. I looked down at the floor, and right there in the center of the throw rug was a gorgeous brown and yellow butterfly. The butterfly flew up into my right palm and calmly stayed there. It did not flutter its wings at all. Immediately, instinctively, I knew it was Danny telling me that it was okay if I didn’t come to Pennsylvania to visit him in the intensive care unit in his current state of illness. He was visiting me. He was telling me thank you for our loving relationship, years of shared laughter, our recent one and only vacation together, and our life together as siblings. He was telling me that he was light as a butterfly now, assuring me that I was also going to be okay.
“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.”~Muhammad Ali

That’s the quote that comes to my mind. A death sting for those of us left behind, but is light for those going to the other side. That’s the bittersweet moment I had. I took the butterfly outside after five minutes in my bathroom. I placed it on the back porch banister. The butterfly immediatelyjumped (not flew) onto my sweater sleeve and stayed there another 15 minutes. It got cold and dark as I continued to talk to Danny through the butterfly. (My kids were watching this exchange through the den window.) I then said goodbye and placed the butterfly down on the banister again, and slipped inside to warm up.

Side note: Danny wore a butterfly bow tie to work every day for years.

I believe spirits can morph and travel as we leave our bodies through higher meditative states, enlightenment, remote viewing, dream and death states. I had the same butterfly experience one time prior when a cousin passed away.
I'm so grateful the Lord and his helpers showed me this miracle, this coming together of this side and the other side, of reality and fantasy. I know where science fiction comes from now! Truth is stranger than fiction! And more beautiful too.
Thanks for allowing me to share.

Avoid Mid-morning Energy Crash

Mid morning crash is due to sugar in the blood reducing, not staying stable. I suggest eating a high fat breakfast instead of a high carb one so the body is satiated for a long time and the sugar impact is not felt. I suggest swapping out cereals and toast for eggs and spinach scrambled in butter. Add cream to your coffee. And don't forget lots of water for hydration. This will keep us from the morning crash too. Water is refreshing and keeps things moving on the inside and outside, even if we are just running to the restroom!

I hope this helps,
KJ Landis
