I am the youngest of five children and I always received hand me downs growing up. We also shopped at Salvation Army, Saint Vincent de Paul and Good Will often because by the time I came along the money for my clothing just was not around. So when I grew up I had ill fitting used clothing. Getting new clothing before school started was a big deal and it wasn't a lot of items. My mother was also an admitted pack rat. There was a use for everything and with five kids we "needed" everything. My refuge and sanctuary became to clean out my closets and reorganize my room over and over again. I vowed to not be a pack rat when I grew up.

To my surprise I fell into my mother's footsteps at first when I got my first apartment and when I first started modeling abroad with my husband! We schlepped huge suitcases over cobblestone streets in Milan, Italy toward our pensione. When I unpacked, my husband Torino looked at me and with wide eyes, said, "Really?" After a few weeks, I left most of my jewelry, scarves and clothing for the housekeepers with a kind note. It felt good too. Now, years later, I maintain the monthly routine with my own kids. We go through the cupboards and closets and give away what we don't wand or need. I aim for a minimal look in the home. If I like the items, the tchotchkes, I keep them in the basement and rotate my stuff so I can enjoy the memories associated with the material things without having them ruin my sanctuary. We take photos of our favorite things we are ready to give up to someone else so they can enjoy what we enjoyed.

I think I fell into my mother's habits at first because it kept me close to her even when we were far apart physically. The connection to her habits was my lifeline to her because I traveled when there was no cell phone, email, computers, or any instant gratification. We wrote letters and waited weeks to hear from family. I moved around so much modeling that some letters never reached me before I was gone, on to another country. I lived in 44 countries in my years of modeling around the globe. I was motivated to change when I saw how easily my husband was moving around the globe. He said prayer and meditation kept him close to his mom. She sent him tiny prayer books. They prayed the same prayers from the same books and that was their connection. I decided that I was able to establish my own style of connection with my mom without being so attached to all of my stuff like she was.

She was born during the 1920s. There wasn't much to go around, so when she had stuff she loved to have all of it all the time. It all seems useful to her and "you never know when there will be another depression and then you will wish you had these things." That's what I grew up hearing.

Now I feel uncomfortable when I enter a home with too much stuff or even clutter or dirty array. I want to help organize and clean! I feel a sense of freedom when I let go of the things that held my mom the prisoner of her things. I don't have to be a partner to them. I would much rather be a partner to my friends and family.

Blessings,
KJ Landis

My Top 2 Tips to Unwind Before Bed

When we get ready for rest and relaxation, we want to unwind but it is difficult. Our day replays over and over again, there is the to-do list for tomorrow already piling up in my head, and there may be a family illness or tragedy one is recovering from or coping with.

A few tools I use for evening wind down because it will allow me to fully let go and get ready for the next day are:

-I write down on paper the to-do list so it exits my head.
-I breathe slowly and purposefully to the count of 10 and back to 1, 2 times at least, seeing the digits float by in my head. I see the numbers 3 times each and they look like the fat simple numbers along the wall of my Kindergarten class when I was a child. It may start out difficult but with practice the other thoughts will go away. I say to myself, "Oh yeah, what number am I on again?" That brings me back to the number. This sort of digit meditation allows me a short vacation from the rest of my life and is very effective at night because it allows me to decompress and get clear before I engage with my partner, read a book, watch tv, or go to sleep.

I hope this helps.

Increase Your Water Consumption

I encourage my clients and community to drink lemon water, cucumber water, and even tomato basil water. I add peach and ginger slices, apple and cinnamon sticks to different jugs in the refrigerator. The key here is to enjoy the flavor profiles while increasing water consumption.

Increasing water slowly to about a gallon a day allows us to realize if we are truly hungry, or socially and emotionally hungry. This is a great gauge in our daily lives for appetite control and stress. Water increases sweat and urine production. Perspiration and urination are how our bodies remove fat when we are on a fat loss protocol. The more water in, the more water and fat out.

Lemon adds acidity to the water, but the body must digest the acid with enzymes that make the body in balance again and we become alkaline. Being more alkaline is healthy to the body because diseases like acid and cannot grow well in an alkaline environment. Cinnamon in the water helps keep blood sugar in balance and tomato basil water is a surprisingly nice change for a savory water rather than sweet flavor on the palate. I like to mix it up, and even my children drink more water now that we add fruits and veggies to the water jugs. I suggest using glass jugs so there is no chance of plastic leaking PBA or estrogen into the water.

I lost 50 pounds 5 years ago and drinking a gallon of lemon or infused water a day has definitely helped me keep the weight off. Yes, I did use the restroom every hour at first, but after 3 weeks, if I didn't get my gallon of water in, I was parched by 10 PM. My body is used to the water with lemon now and I use the restroom as often as anybody else does who does not drink lots of lemon water.

The Importance of Breathing Correctly

Exhaling slowly during the lifting of the weights during weight training is important because it helps with the contraction of muscles and the focus of the mindset. If you hold your breath while lifting weights it increases blood pressure which is not good.

For yoga and meditation exercises I suggest only breathing in and out through the nose and try to extend the breathing for six seconds on the inhalation and six seconds on the exhalation. This allows us to expand the muscles in between each rib and actually get more oxygen into our lungs with every breath. The benefit of this kind of breathing is when there is a real emergency in your life you may not react with a panic attack or anxiety because you have practiced this kind of breathing with regularity. It helps with sleep and focus as well. This sort of long extended yoga breathing helped me when I was in a water explosion accident while driving. I was able to breathe my way slowly and safely to the freeway exit and not hit anybody and get myself to a gas station where I could pour cold water on my body.

I hope this helps.

Allergy Help

Living in San Francisco, flowers are in bloom year round, bringing year round allergies to my clients. We attack them with ginger tea with lemon and local San Francisco honey.

The ginger opens up the chest and helps blood and oxygen circulation throughout the body.

The lemon has essential oils to suppress the phlegm from catching the back of the throats and allows us bring phlegm up (as a natural expectorant).

The local honey is important because we are ingesting all of the pollen in food form that we are allergic to in our area and in season. We become, essentially, part of our environment in a real way. My children's pediatrician told me to do this years ago when my son was suffering from allergies and asthma. He recovered sooner than other kids who went the pharmaceutical route. The honey is good for soothing an itchy throat as well and even is good before bed by itself for keeping us from itchy coughing all night (keeping us up).

I hope this helps.
