Eat Anti-inflammatory Foods for Pain Control!

8/31/2015

Today I went to my back and knee doctor at Kaiser Permanente. I usually wait about 6 to 9 months in between seeing him for pain because I can handle a lot of aches with all of my working out, eating real foods, and waitressing nights. Moving lots, laughing lots, sleeping well, and creative writing feeds and heals my body more than medicine. After a small steroid shot in the knee and back, my doctor and I chatted about my grain free/sugar free eating lifestyle. He stated that I was on the right track for pain control, long term.

Kaiser is now studying closely the anti-inflammatory foods for pain control. They are now getting with my program! Anti-inflammatory foods are usually grain free and sugar-free. Anti-inflammatory foods naturally cause the body to become alkaline inside and may be anti-cancer and anti-chronic conditions. They are helpful in preventing fatigue as well.

So what are some anti-inflammatory foods? Add these to your eating lifestyle and see if your aches and pains lessen!

Here is a small list:

  • garlic
  • onions
  • leeks
  • broccoli
  • apple cider vinegar
  • fish and seafood
  • tree nuts and their oils
  • coconut and its oil
  • citrus like lemons, limes, grapefruits
  • olives and its oil
  • green tea
  • Chinese monkfruit or its sugar made from it, called Lakanto!!

Thanks once again for trusting me with your readership. I pray you feel great after implementing these yummy items into your life of eating.

Blessings,
KJ Landis

Gifts From My Father

My father, Myron Samuel Landis, passed away August 4, 2015. I felt very peaceful and calm at his death, as he was 93, in the late stages of Alzheimer's Disease, and I had spent a good amount of time with him just before his passing. For me, the flood of early morning and late night talks we had came back in waves. My father was a philosopher of sorts, a practical man, who had lived on the front lines during World War II. For him, what we experience after we die was simple.

"We become the grasses, the trees, the flowers, and the fruits and vegetables. When we decompose, we are becoming the fertilizer for the generations of harvests to come. So, we become part of the future people and the whole earth."

These comforting and philosophical words he shared with me many times on Sunday nights. As a child, I was afraid to go to bed Sunday nights because I thought I would die before Monday morning, and I did not want to miss school! I became sad and scared. He always made me feel calmer and deeply loved, and made the difficult things seem simple.

Daddy broke down huge decisions into smaller tasks, and he often weighed the pros and cons of a decision on a piece of paper with a line down the middle. He wrote the pros on one side and the cons on the other side. Whichever list was longer, he would go with, and he helped me many times with my life decisions in this manner too.

What have your elders taught you? Have those things served you your whole life? What have you disengaged from in their advice and why?

Action vs Reaction

8/19/2015

Action is an intention, and then movement upon that intention. When we act upon our goals or desires we are reaching forward with our whole being. It is a resounding, yet silent yes. We don't have to announce to the world what we are doing for our goals because it will be revealed soon enough, if we continue practicing action.

Reaction is also movement, also things we do to go forward or protect ourselves, but it is rooted in the thoughts, desires, and physical actions of others. Reaction may be self serving and necessary for survival in mind, body, and spirit. It is primal, ancestral, and natural to the human species. So, rather than see it as wrong or primitive in a bad way, see reaction in our lives as a birthright. We could not have continued as a species without reaction.

We may plan out our reaction too, like when someone is bullying another. One may react immediately and fight, or one may take calm and correct reactions that will make the bullying stop once and for all.

Knowing the differences between action and reaction may assist us in future goal setting, in identifying who derails us and what is their personal motivation for doing so, and we may also learn how to let go of reactions and actions that do not serve our higher purpose. It is worth the work, my friends. You have entrusted me by reading and writing to me, allowing me to answer your many questions on food and nutrition for healing, and how to build a tribe of support when making lifestyle changes for the better. This is no different. Thank you once again.

I want to hear from you! Please subscribe to my weekly newsletter which links to this blog and to my 2 minute YouTube video. Leave your email and comments, please! Please share my work using the buttons in the side bar.

What Does Your Body Do?

8/10/2015

The motivation for going to the gym, to an exercise class, or to getting outside into nature should be for the body function, performance, and movement for a fuller, more productive life. We want to grow old with agility, mobility, and fun activity.

We need to shift the goal from getting to the gym in order to look skinny to getting to the gym in order to see how we can get our body to serve us our whole lives. Functional workouts will help us lift groceries, pick up laundry and furniture, and carry children. Getting stronger and recovering faster is so important in becoming the person we want to be. If we are so sore that we can't move the next day or two, well then that really didn't serve our long term goal.

Remember, the looking great and feeling sexy from the hormone releases are icing on the non-existent cake! It is the awesome side effect of the eating green and clean, the exercise for life, the sleep for maximum rest and recovery, and the stress reduction through silence therapies.

I know a lot of skinny Minnies at the gym and work place who are not healthy at all. They are chronically hungry, under eating, over eating, or eating processed foods on a daily basis. They come to me with problems of cholesterol, arthritis, diabetes, gout, stress, allergies, digestion, eczema, insomnia, headaches, and so much more. These folks need stress management and stress relief exercises and therapies, not another high powered workout with weights and cardio.

Sometimes I tell them we will not lift weights or go to the gym together at all. Sometimes I tell my clients we will go for a walk outside and enjoying nature together. Sometimes we meditate. Sometimes we walk in silence, observing the birds, flowers, grasses, the sounds of nature. Sometimes we do yoga together.

This week, focus on what your body does for you rather than what it looks like. Thank your body for all it does for you. Build that relationship with yourself and see where it takes you in the coming weeks, months, and years.

Blessings,

KJ Landis

Personal Boundaries

8/3/2015

I was blessed to travel to the East coast recently. The cultural perspective of humans everywhere allow us to learn and grow. My experience with yoga classes in every place I travel to are learning moments for me as well!

One morning a teacher was speaking about boundaries. She was saying we push ourselves little by little in the classroom, never knowing where our stretch will take us, but if we say we can't, or we must not, because the doctor said to NOT to do X, Y, or Z, well that is allowing others to place boundaries and limits upon us. Let us feel our way to success and stretch beyond our boundaries, tiny bits at a time. We are not to allow pain and injury to be the rule, but we may surprise ourselves, inside the room, and then carry the successes outside the classroom into other areas in life.

Some of us do not even know our boundaries! What about that? We have been so afraid of X, Y, or Z, both in our mental and our physical lives, that we limit ourselves to the point of paralyzation. We go through the same small routines that feel safe albeit limiting. We are living in a cardboard box as much as the homeless person on the corner.

So today, stretch your mental and physical being, just a millimeter longer. Ask yourself what you accept and do not accept in your life in the area of ______________________. Pick a category and work on it. Write it down. Choose one physical and one mental or spiritual area of your life, be it career, intelligence, religious, relationships, etc. Work on your boundaries. Once you know your boundaries, then others will respect your boundaries. If you do not even know your boundaries, how can you expect others to honor them?

Food for thought, my tribe..
I want to hear from you! Please email me and join the conversation. Please share my work by clicking the above Facebook, Twitter, and Google Plus tags. Tell friends and family I am here to help.
