After the run, we were guzzling water in my kitchen. I asked her the feelings she had about the experience. That’s when she told me the only way to get comfortable with doing something is to get uncomfortable. She said that she knew it would become easier after repeated efforts, so she was committed to coming back and doing the hill regularly. She also stated that she had to make that kick-ass run her “bitch.”
That’s what a warrior does. Instead of giving the power to the hill, she used the power of the hard climb as motivation to not fear the hill, to own the hill, to accept the power it provides when coming to the top, and to realize just how far up we had journeyed. Anything can become comfortable, but first when we attempt it we must embrace getting uncomfortable. After eight years of running two miles straight up, up, up, that daunting hill has become a close friend of mine.
To me, the hill is a metaphor for any life challenges. It was simple. Put one foot in front of the other. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Simple, yes. Easy, no. Maybe you have challenges ahead that seem overwhelming or impossible. Maybe you are thinking to yourself that you can’t run a mountain trail. Maybe you are thinking that you are too fat, too sick, too achy, too out of shape, too inexperienced. Perhaps your personal challenge will be to walk for five minutes on a level plane without intermission. Make the task at hand your ally, little by little. We were all beginners at something at some time! This is no different.
Choosing new foods, severing food addictions, learning alternative healing therapies, exercising with a different point of view, are all doable. Know it. Believe it. Baby steps will take you there. Make the time you spend with your food, your learning, and your exercise count. Treasure it as sacred because you are sacred. You deserve to be in a superior state of health. Become your superior self.
Blessings,
