Life Insurance, Health Insurance

​This week, I am thinking about how and when I first purchased life insurance. My coworker Scott was talking to me about how he was going to have a baby, and he saw that I was pregnant. He suggested that I look into life insurance. I never thought about it. I took his friend's number and began my education into that arena.

Every month for four months, the insurance agent met my husband and I at a coffee house, and he educated us in the world of life
insurance. He was not pushy, but he was convincing. At 8 months pregnant, we purchased life insurance for our new family!

My hotel job is a union job, and the union negotiates health insurance for all of us regularly. Luckily, we have zero monthly premiums for ourselves, and only $10 a month for all of our dependents. Doctor visits are $10. Lab tests and hospitalization is free. There are health classes and educational groups available at no cost too. 

I am grateful for the opportunities provided to me and my family by my choices and by my employer.

Now, almost two decades later. I am in the wellness world, in the helping profession. I now think about life insurance and health insurance in a new way. I think about the words life insurance as a whole life experience. If I eat well and move a lot in my daily life, I will live a long life. Of course, accidents happen, and I cannot control others' actions or world disasters. So, I take a deep breath and eat the most nutrient dense foods, exercise daily, laugh and play often! That's life insurance! Health insurance is the same recipe. If I eat an anti-inflammatory protocol, full of fermented foods and greens, and continue my movement and meditation practices, I am creating my own health insurance.

To be honest, I rarely go to the doctor for big problems, only for checkups and hormonal issues related to aging. I turned my own life and health around four years ago. If I can do it, you all can too. Here's to your ultimate life and health insurance!

Time Is Not Linear!

I'm so happy that January has brought me some a-ha moments. I spent five days with my mama, who is 88. She is having short-term memory problems, but the gift of the memory loss is that she feels free. She told me she feels like time has no meaning. I witnessed Mama telling me about experiences in her life which were happening now, according to her, but in linear time they were about 80 years ago. I was in her bedroom and didn't leave her side except to go to hot yoga. I was not sleeping much, and to my surprise, the whole trip to Pennsylvania felt like one long day. I also lost linear time! It was a sense of freedom to me as well. I could just BE, without the list of errands to run or people to please. That was a gift.

Many books and spiritual practices speak about our human invention of time, and in ancient days, there really was not a definite frame, except for the moon cycles and seasonal cycles. 

When I ask my friends who meditate to share with me their experiences with leaving their bodies, they tell me leaving the body through meditation is a release of the earthly time constraints. We can visit whomever, wherever, and whenever we choose. It takes a conscious choice, and repetitive practice. Then the belief system kicks in (when we practice something with regularity). 

Dr. Christianne Northrup writes in Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom that our biography leads to our biology. She says our life story and experiences lead to our beliefs about ourselves, and our body physically works in congruence to keep the story true. So, in order to change any negative thoughts, and the negative physiological responses resulting from those negative self beliefs, we must first take on new and different experiences (with repeated actions) that lead to a new belief system, and therefore healing in the body symptoms and conditions may occur. 

So, work with yourself, here, now. Say, "I love myself forever, and I'm a valuable entity with much to share with this place." Say it often, affirming the timelessness of the statement. We humans created the clocks and calendars. I do not believe those tools were intended to increase stress in our lives.

Take a moment to embrace your family and friends who show love through action and words, who support you, regardless of the time spent apart. Have you had a close friendship with someone whom you haven't seen in years, and then when you reconnect it is like picking up the thread of a conversation started eons ago? I have! That's when I realized instantaneously that love has no time barriers either.

​Know that it is okay to love someone completely and to disagree with them completely too (because there is no time, really). You cannot speed up understanding. We humans are generally people pleasers, especially women. When we stand in our power, the reaction from others may be strong. And, that is okay. If time heals all wounds, and time is not linear, then we can choose to heal now! I want to hear from you! Please share with me your thoughts and feelings on the subject.

What Are Super Foods, Really?

What Are Super Foods, Really?

We see the term super foods in lots of health websites and magazines. We are encouraged to eat super foods as often as possible in order to be really healthy and vital. What are they and why are they so important to optimum health? 

Super foods are foods found in nature that need no processing in order to be consumed by humans. They have high amounts of nutrients and those nutrients are bioavailable to the body. That means they are easily absorbed for use, rather than passed through and eliminated. Usually we see varieties of fruits and vegetables mentioned as super foods. Super foods have been called functional foods. This means they have more nutrients packed in each bite and do more good for the body's systems than just provide the nutritional chemicals for survival. They help us thrive. Super foods blur the line between medicine and food.

Here is my list of what I think are super foods based upon years of research and my own observation of healing experiments with myself and the people I help on their journey to their superior selves:

Superior Self's Super Foods
  • Pastured eggs are good for protein and fat source, their color, flavor, and texture are made distinctive by high amounts of Vitamin A, D, E, K2, B-12, folate, riboflavin, zinc, calcium, beta carotene, choline, and tons of omega 3 fatty acids, including DHA, EPA, ALA, and AA. A pasture-raised egg is a true super food.
  • Kale is full of fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, phytochemicals, and helps fight arthritis, cardiovascular disease, urinary infections, and asthma.
  • Brussels Sprouts have a large amount of vitamin K and vitamin C, even more vitamin C than oranges!
  • Berries of all sorts lower blood pressure and stress. They have antioxidants which protect the cells from free radicals.
  • Cacao (raw) has good dietary fat that is absorb-able by the body, it improves memory, and gives you loads of energy. It also keeps you full for hours.
  • Garlic is an antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, antiprotozoan and an antiviral.
  • Ghee is butter with the milk proteins removed. It helps with constipation and colon issues and the fat helps with memory loss.
  • Olive oil improves blood pressure, inhibits oxidation of LDL cholesterol, increases protective HDL cholesterol, helps with longevity and a healthier aging process.
  • Coconut oil is a medium change triglyceride food which assist us in moving fat through our body to be used as energy. This results in our body burning unneeded fat that is on the hips thighs and abdomen. Coconut oil helps with brain function, dementia, and lubricating the joints from inside the body. It also helps with the skin and hair being soft and supple. It has been shown to provide relief from kidney problems, heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV and other viruses, cancer, and bone strength. Coconut oil builds immunity.

This list is not comprehensive and I asked you to experiment with these foods and then do your own research and try lots of foods that are considered super foods. Try them for a few weeks and see if you feel better, and better, and better!
