The Moment I Knew I Needed to Lose Fat

Five years ago when I was 47 years old, I was having some back aches consistently and went to my doctor at Kaiser. The neatly manicured medical assistant came out and pointed to me and then to her chart with a red pen, and said to me, "Hey Kimberly Jane, I think there's been a mix up. You are 24 hours too early, girl! Okay, okay, let me see what I can do."

A few minutes later the medical assistant squeezed me in between two other appointments, ushered me in quickly and told me to get on the scale. I froze at the doorway. It was open. I said, "No scales please. It's on my chart. They aren't supposed to weigh me."

The woman, Liza, slid her glasses down her nose, looked sternly at me at said quietly, "I got you an appointment when you didn't have an appointment. Get in here and get on this scale right now."

Sheepishly, I did as I was told, taking off as many layers of clothing as I could as fast as I could. I took of my backpack and shoes too.

183. The scale said 183. I was tearing up a little and the inner Negative Nancy was having her way with me. How could this be? I was a personal trainer, a fitness trainer, teaching step aerobics, indoor cycling classes, lifting weights, running, and I had even completed 16 marathons. I ate low-fat or no-fat breads, crackers, cereals and snack foods. I ate lots of fruits and veggies, beans, and healthy whole grains. Something was awry. At that moment I chose to transform my outside to match the powerful feeling of who I was on the inside: awesome and kooky KJ.

That's the exact moment I knew I had to do something to lose fat and change my life.

I want to hear from you? Did you have a moment in your life when you knew something had to change?
Blessings,

My Top 2 Tips for Healthy Fat Loss

I was inspired to lose weight because I had gained a little every year in my thirties and forties, especially after having children. I was following the wrong dogma that the American Dietetic Association and the American Medical Association gave us: eat low fat and lots of healthy whole grains.

My breaking point was when I signed up for a liposuction at 47 and my husband got irate, citing Kanye West's mother's demise. I knew there had to be another way.

I wanted my outside to match how powerful and amazing I felt every day on the inside. I was a 16 time marathoner, a mother of two amazing children, a wellness coach, an educator, a professional photographer, a happy server, an enthusiastic reader, a loving wife, and world traveler.

I lost the weight using the natural pregnancy hormone HCG and eating only green veggies, white fleshed fish, seafood, and drinking a gallon of water a day. I was always very active, and even had certified personal training certificates. I was a certified fitness trainer too, teaching many exercise classes. Fit can be fat too!

I wanted to be lean like when I was modeling years before. It took me about 60 days, as written in my previous letter to you.

I keep the fat off by hiking, yoga, walking, lifting weights, and serving (waitressing) in the evenings. I'm busy. I eat clean and green 80% of the time and allow treats (notice I don't call them cheats) 20% of the time. I still drink lots of water, meditate and smile at myself daily!

My best two tips are:

1. Slowly increase water consumption to a gallon of water a day and add lemon or cucumbers. That way you can tell if you are truly hungry or just socially and emotionally hungry. This also allows us to urinate or sweat out the fat as we are losing fat because that is how the body eliminates fat.
2. Enlist a buddy to do this journey with you. Building a tribe of support is extremely important when making lifestyle changes.

I hope this helps.

How to Stave Off Sugar Cravings

We all have feelings around sweets. Birthday parties, weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, anniveries, graduations, they all have some celebration including or climaxing with a sweet treat. Let's go back further. Our mother's milk or formula was incredibly sweet. We are hard wired to love sweet things in order to survive as a species, so we wouldn't reject our mother's milk. So how do we not give in to sugar cravings on a daily basis?

First of all we must realize that all plant matter turns into glucose sugar in the bloodstream during digestion. Whether you are eating a candy bar, cereal, or spinach leaves, they will all convert to sugar.

The speed of which the glucose sugar moves through the body and is used as energy or turns into fat is determined by the amount of fiber that is in the food. So, the spinach, which is full of fiber and lower in natural sugar, will keep us more stable in energy and fuller longer, and not craving sugar soon after eating it like the other items mentioned above. If I add butter or olive oil to the spinach I slow the process down more, keeping cravings for sugar at bay and keeping me full longer.

If we eat healthy dietary fats and oils such as extra virgin olive oil, avocados, coconuts, raw nuts and their butters, grass fed dairy products and wild caught fish and seafood, the fats keep us saturated for hours and also keep us from craving sugary things.

In the morning I have coffee with 2 tablespoons of raw cream and then I drink close to a gallon of water during my hot yoga class or hike. I add lots of lemon, cinnamon, or cucumber to my water. The citrus and other flavors keep me from wanting sweet things throughout the day. The cream in my coffee satiates me for a long time too.

The sheer fact that I am drinking a lot of water allows me to step back and define whether I am truly hungry or whether I am socially and emotionally hungry (when offered treats at the restaurant where I work at night). If I am truly hungry, I eat! But after a few weeks of smart choices, upping my green fibrous veggies, increasing my fat intake and increasing the water, I can easily say no to the treats that come down from the banquet department of the hotel restaurant where I work. The pastries and cakes are beautiful artwork, but they no longer whisper sweet nothings in my ear.

Finally, I encourage folks to get a buddy to join in on the journey of anti-refined sugar. Building a tribe of support is important when making lifestyle changes for the better. Identifying when you want to celebrate with a dessert is part of the plan too. When you do have a treat, it will be enjoyed without guilt then. It will be a treat, not a cheat. Guilt is self induced, and we can rid ourselves of the inner critic with our tribe at our side.

I hope this helps. Please contact me if I may be of any assistance.

So Called Healthy Items...

Healthy is a term that is slung around like natural.
We really do not know what that means until we dig deeper and see how the food product affects us individually. We also have to read food ingredients lists carefully. (Cyanide is all natural too.)

Some items I think may be touted as healthful but aren't:

Whole wheat bread: bread is made from wheat, and any refined and processed wheat has gluten in it. Most people are sensitive to gluten whether they are allergic to gluten or not. All plant matter turns into sugar in the blood stream. The finer the grind of the wheat berry, the higher the sugar content, called the glycemic index. This raises the glucose sugar levels in our bloodstream during digestion. This is great if we are exercising vigorously soon afterwards but not so good if we are more sedentary. Our body only holds about a teaspoon of glucose in it at any one time. Two slices of whole wheat bread have a lot more than that. Where can the body store the sugar? If not usedThe liver may converts the sugar into fat to be used at a later time.

Low calorie sports drinks : now that there are low calorie energy drinks and sports recovery drinks my kids want some after volleyball practice or tennis. I have to say no. I offer them homemade lemonade with a pinch of XYLA or Lakanto instead. The sports drinks on the market have chemical sugar substitutes in them. The body doesn't know what to do with the substitute. Sometimes it reacts in the brain as if it had sugar and makes us crave sugar anyway later on. Some chemical sugar substitutes have excitotoxins in them which excite brain cells so much that they explode and die off.

Supplement tablets: many store bought supplement tablets are pressed and bound with cement and talc. These binding agents not only keep the price of the vitamins low, they keep the supplements from being absorbed into the body. They aren't the most healthful thing you can choose. I think the best way to get vitamins and minerals into our bodies is through nutrient dense foods.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if I may assist any more. I want to hear from you. What do you see that looks healthy but later on find out is not so good for you?
