Make Food, Not War (With Your Children)!

How can we change our standard American diet without creating tension in the family? "We have always done it this way," is what my kids told me when I shared with them my new eating plan. I told them that my eating plan was for me, not them. Eventually they came around and now the whole family is in support, but at first they thought I was crazy. "Whole wheat and grains are good for you!" It says so in all the posters at school!"

"I want my toast and pasta, peanut butter sandwiches and soda is a treat!" Lox and bagels eventually shifted to lox on cabbage leaves or on seaweed leaves with raw creme fraiche. Cheddar bunny crackers became raw cheddar with apples. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches became raw cashew butter and raw honey or smashed figs on flax crackers without grains. They were just as satisfying, and kept the kids fuller longer. 



When the kids began participating in their cooking and food choices, then the real creativity began. This led to bonding rather than whining. The tension subsided and we were able to shift into a new team of collaborators in the kitchen as well as a family. It wasn't just a hierarchy anymore. We grew in many ways outside of the kitchen too. We respected each other more in the areas of research and learning. We spent more time going to the library and looking up nutrition and cooking videos on line. My wellness and health journey to the grain free/sugar free side of life has been a win/win situation.


If you are making changes in your life, just know that you are not alone. I am here to help. It will get easier in time, and the family and friends will support you eventually, especially if you empower them and educate them as to the whys.

Change is Inevitable, So Embrace It

I am going to share something personal with you all today. My serving job at the hotel where i work is undergoing some changes. They are renovating the first floor and we are all moving to the 46th floor for about 6 months with beautiful views of both sides of the Bay in San Francisco. The hours of food and drink will be limited, and there will most likely be only buffets and alcohol service available. The results to the employees may be lay offs or reduced work hours during the construction time.


Now, I have to face facts. Unless I am number one in seniority, which I am not, I will be affected in my work schedule. I am extremely busy nowadays anyway with my coaching practice, my workshop teaching, my writing of my second book, and my various PR work, getting the news and views out about my passion in the wellness world. Plus, I am a mom and athlete, wife and friend. 


Change is inevitable, my friends. So, I can either freak out about it, and lament the lack of hours at the regular evening routine, or see it as an opportunity to devote myself to myself. I choose to be my own best cheerleader at this moment and see this as an opportunity to use the gift wisely. My thoughts become my reality. This is a gift, really. I have my whole life to work for someone else. How often do I have the extra hours to be exactly what and who I want to be? My bucket list is itching to be scratched! I have so much work to do to help others help themselves!


I choose to embrace this moment. Just that energy will swirl around the universe and be a positive for me and those whose lives I touch. Please join me in this wave of positive energy! If I may help you see the way to your own best self in times of struggle or strife, of great change or subtle discomfort, please reach out to me. It may be of the mental, physical, or spiritual nature. Be your superior self. You have a tribe of support.

What We Put On Our Body Counts Too!

I'm happy to report, that in the past three years my clients and friends, family and strangers freely share with me their mini-revolutions. As they make lifestyle changes in their eating and movement patterns, we celebrate each and every time we meet. I am my tribe's biggest cheerleader.

When their doctors ask them what they are doing to make their blood work and other health markers improve so steeply and so rapidly, they mention Superior Self's Guide to Wellness from Within. They offer to introduce me to the doctor and I am now working with creating wellness workshops in doctors' communities.

The elephant in the room that we don't talk about is the crap that we put on our bodies rather than into our bodies. As many foods that there are out there in the world, there are at least three times as many skin care and hair care products. From makeup to sunscreen, perfumes to conditioners, acne control to moisturizers, new products are being created in laboratories every day. Each new product promises to be the best one that will solve all our skin and hair problems, create a love life that's remarkable, and just may be the answer to world peace.

The truth is a bid murkier. Most modern skin care and hair care products have chemicals in them I can't pronounce, and cause hormonal disregulation. They are bad for us and even worse for the environment. They are full of estrogens. (Even our cleaning supplies have estrogens in them!) We believed the hype for so long, but now we have some companies using truly natural and healthful ingredients.

The skin is our largest organ. It absorbs everything in the environment as well as what we directly put on it. We owe it to ourselves to take care of our entire selves, inside and out. I personally have stopped using moisturizer on my skin other than edible oils, like olive oil, coconut oil, carrot oil, grape seed oil, etc. If it can go in my body, then I will put it on my body and hair. I try and find the most natural sunscreen I can. Old fashioned zinc is a winner against sunburn although it doesn't look sexy. Sometimes I use baby products. I figure more time and energy is used in making things safe for infants. I may be wrong. (I may have bought swamp land in Florida!)

So, I close this blog asking you to read ingredient lists on your skin and hair products the next time you are at the store. Google terms you don't understand. Be a participant in your whole health, inside and out. Research alternatives in lotions and potions. Make your own! Be creative.
