How I Define Myself

We all have these internal dialogues with ourselves, all day, every day. Unless I am in a hot yoga class, the chatter between my ears is non stop. The nonstop internal dialogue is often me telling myself who I am and what I can and cannot tolerate. Sometimes I want to stop the insanity. That's when I go to the sauna and turn on a ten minute guided meditation and follow everything the guide says in my earbuds. It is a vacation from my noisy self.

I define myself as a very safe individual. I'm safe in the way I love to follow the rules, people can trust my word as my promise, and I am generous. I also define myself as a little rigid, anal retentive, and mostly right. I define myself as not spontaneous. I make lists and plan ahead for everything. I need to be needed, and I need to be in control.

In the past four years I learned a lot about myself: I spent time doing everything opposite of how I had defined myself! I took chances with an experimental diet, and succeeded, long term! I ran marathons when I didn't consider myself an athlete. I jogged alone in the woods when I always played it safe before. I flew on an airplane twice spontaneously when formerly I always had planned trips months in advance. I wore a mesh, see -through Lycra shirt to yoga, even though I am a very conservative dresser. I wrote three books, built a website, and reached out to strangers when I considered myself technologically challenged.

I realize now that I defined myself too narrowly. As I look back on these things that I accomplished that weren't in my wheel house of comfort, I have to admit that I am not my definitions. I'm affected so powerfully by doing new and unusual things, that I now can say I'm consistently morphing and changing with each new experience. We can all redefine ourselves with the choices we make and the tasks we choose to challenge ourselves with.

What are your personal definitions? Have you done anything recently to challenge how you see yourself? I want to hear from you!

Blessings,

KJ Landis

Lessons from a Car Accident

A few months ago, my kids and I were in the van, on our way to the orthodontist. At the exit ramp, I was hit from behind by a young woman who didn't slow down with the exiting traffic. My daughter asked me if it was an earthquake. I smiled and told her no, that we were in a car accident.

The woman who hit my car was driving a small Toyota, and it was pretty much totaled. My auto (Honda minivan) had a little dent in the rear bumper. Nobody was hurt. We both pulled over and got out of our cars.
She was very apologetic and I encouraged her to calm down. The things we can replace, but it is a miracle that we were okay. I asked her and my kids to hold hands and pray a grateful prayer.

After the prayer we exchanged insurance information. She told me I was the nicest person she ever got into an accident with!

Since then, I feel like I am noticing the little gifts the universe gives me with more regularity. The colors of the sunset and sunrise glow more richly, the flowers are more brilliant. A smile towards me is warmer than before. I feel as if the very volume of my existence has been turned up. The accident could have been a death sentence. It was a miracle we were all okay, especially after observing her damaged vehicle.

I ask you, does it take an accident or grave illness for us to realize how valuable our lives are? I want to hear from you. Please share your stories of the a-ha moments.

Blessings,
KJ Landis

Core Workout

2/15/2016

When you read the above title of this blog post, what came into your mind? Visions of chubby women and men struggling to do sit-ups? Perhaps a fitness instructor yelling, "Tighten those abs!"

We can have a core workout physically, which can mean all of the above sentences, or a mix of yoga poses, weight training, or dancing even. A strong physical core means that our back will be supported when we use it. Our muscles wrap around the middle of our body.

When I was a child, my left leg went numb, my lower back ached constantly, and my leg was dragging behind me for lack of muscle control. The doctors discovered that I had spondolysthesis. My 5th lumbar vertebrae up from my tailbone was a little out of place, pressing on nerves, enough so to numb my left leg.

The experimental trial was to lay in bed for a month and see if the pressure came off of the nerve. The other option was back surgery. My parents were frightened at that option, so being in bed for a month was the non-invasive answer.

After a month of being waited on hand and foot, my left leg regained its feeling and I could walk normally again. Unfortunately, inactivity made me gain 15 pounds. I was told to strengthen my core, physically, every day. The doctors taught me all about sit-ups and stretching, plank (yoga), and rest and recovery for the core by curling up in child's pose (yoga). I refused to let myself go to bed without doing 200 sit-ups a day. I began dance classes and then became a certified aerobics, indoor cycling, and step aerobics teacher.

During that era of my youth, I went to the library each Saturday morning by myself and participated in a free yoga class in the darkly lit community room. At 15 years of age, I was the youngest yogi. The teacher was in her 70's, and the other students were senior citizens as well.

It was there that I learned of the power of silence, of doing nothing after an hour of trying difficult poses. The teacher's voice was velvet. I worked on my mental core. It was the core of silence, meditation, and repetition. Suiting up and showing up Saturday after Saturday worked my mental core to discipline and strength (as I worked my physical core).

Fast forward 5 years. At 20 years old, I was a senior in the university. I worked two jobs, taught fitness classes at Elaine Powers gym (for fun!), and maintained a straight A average. I met an artist where I waitressed who happened to go to my university, although in a different department. His art was amazing to me, very spiritual and abstract all at the same time. I saw images of the Holy Trinity mixed with splashes of color and poems about the homeless population.

My friend asked me if I had ever read the New Testament. I said that I had not, thinking it would offend my Jewish family. He set upon lending me his bible and I went on another journey, working out my spiritual core. I read a few pages a day and asked him questions about things I didn't understand, both symbolically and historically.

From then on, when I travelled the world modeling, I made it a point to visit and spend quality time in churches, synagogues, and temples. I realized that I had to have core workouts in every facet of my being.

Of course, as I got older and wiser, albeit busier, my goals remained to honor the core workouts that I learned many moons ago. The mind, body, and spiritual centers work better together. It is beneficial on many levels to do a core workout whenever and wherever we are. It is never too late, and you are never too feeble.

I want to hear from you!
Blessings,
KJ Landis

Turn One Day into Day One

Beginning anything new is fun, exhilarating, and sometimes a little scary. I remember when I decided to write my first book. I wrote the book by hand on composition notebooks that I bought at the dollar store. I did not know how to type, I didn't have any internet experience other than shopping, and Microsoft Word was foreign to me. I contacted my mouse squad, my two children, and they taught me everything.

I love the generations that followed me because they have all of the tech stuff down pat. They grow up with that stuff. It's as easy to them as cursive handwriting is to me. Cursive handwriting is not even taught in schools anymore! So that task is difficult for my kids. As they taught me all of the modern computer and typing methods, I made them sit down and practice cursive writing. I hope it serves them well later on in life.

Having a first moment or day when attempting anything different in our lives is called DAY 1. Remember the New Year's Resolutions? How long have they lasted now that it is February? Instead of thinking of yourself as a success or failure, just focus on doing WHATEVER for one day. Then tomorrow, you have just to get through that one day. Before you know it, you can cross out the boxes on the calendar and holler for victory. Your repeated 1 DAY became a series of awesome successes.

That is exactly what happened to me when I gave up alcohol during November and December for my 60 DAY personal challenge. It felt daunting and the negative self talk was all around me and within me. When I broke my pattern of negativity, I got through one day. Then 2 days, and so on. I made it!

How about you? What seems undoable to you until you get through one day? I want to hear from you!

KJ Landis

RESTRAIN, REFRAIN, RETRAIN, REFRAME

2/1/2016

When we choose to change our lifestyle for the better, we do things differently, sometimes for the first time. When we make that plan and carry it out, it may not be easy. We mentally restrain ourselves from jumping into the cookie and ice cream social at the work party. We say no thanks to the free happy hour, fried junk food at the bar.

After about three weeks it becomes part of our new normal. So it is not gritting our teeth and sticking to our plan now. Now, it is a gentler refraining of the things we no longer want in our eating lifestyle or in our movement lifestyle. There is a natural flow with our choices. With repetition, there is positive reinforcement. We see improvements in our health all around, subtle at first, and then not so subtle.

After about six weeks, we have retrained our minds into making healthier choices as a natural way of living. Our check up with our doctor will show improvements in the data. Okay, so now we have proof that we are healthy, and our feeling better is real. I think it is a big internal pat on the back. Friends and family will begin noticing your vibrant glow and shift in energy.

After about twelve weeks of living in your new mindset, you have reframed how you see the world. Your cells have turned over a new leaf, your body has responded to the choices made, and now, when you choose a treat, it is not a cheat. You no longer beat yourself up over the choice, and you no longer spiral out of control into past habits. Friends and family will either try to sabotage your efforts with temptation, or ask for your help on their journey.

I am living proof of the journey through RESTRAIN, REFRAIN, RETRAIN, and REFRAME. I have gone through the phases shared here. Have you? Please tell me your thoughts about these words and how they affected your life in your wellness sphere. Have you had to let some people go during the process? Have you held new friends close to your heart? I want to hear from you!

Blessings,
KJ Landis
