Many of you may be sensitive to this blog this week, and for good reason: It is about family expectations. You may put yourself in my shoes. Perhaps you are nodding your head. We hold our family to a higher level of expectation than we do strangers or friends. When I say I'm going to do something, family says, "Yes, when?"
We also hold ourselves up to a higher level of accountability to our family. So when I say to them that I am really going to stop smoking this time, then I better do it (for example)! They get really disappointed when we let them down again and again, eventually not believing us when we say we are going to do something. It is a balancing act we must walk, and it isn't always easy.
When I started blogging and created my Facebook page, my family was surprised because I was so challenged by technology. Then when I began my website, they began to believe. By the time my book came around, they were full on mental supporters. I was coaching, teaching, photographing meals, advising clients both paid and for free at senior centers, libraries, on line, and in person.
I offered my services to my family for free. Because it was for free, they could get it any time. They were family, and weren't as motivated. I was a phone call away. Interesting. When my book was released, my close friends, clients, and supporters all over the web bought my book right away. My workshops were very successful at moving books. But my large family was, and still is, very slow at purchasing my book. I am just noticing this, that is all. I am not judging.
Are you in a business and your family thinks you will do that service for free because it is your area of expertise? In the beginning, when you offered the service for free, did they wonder what the catch was? Now that you are no longer available for free, and your income is dependent on your area of expertise, are they expecting you to send them goods or services because you love them and they love you, that you have such a life long history together?
You are not alone in this. It is delicate and sometimes people will have to have time away from you to appreciate your value in your field of expertise.
