Our ancient ancestors slept when the sun went down, hunted, gathered, walked a lot, and did domestic chores to stay alive. There was plenty of down time. The stressors were not all day every day. Traffic jams, play dates, work, cooking, cleaning, school, the gym, extracurricular activities, etc., are keeping us humming with stress. Let's now add electronics, media, tv, etc. CALGON, take me away!
The stress hormone cortisol is released when we are feeling wacked out with lots of things to do. It also puts us in flight or fight mode. Cortisol makes us hold on to fat because our primal body thinks we are in a true emergency and may not be able to eat for a long time. When we eat in a stressed out state, our body is holding on to the nutrition in case we starve for days afterward. Even if we are eating grain free, sugar free, and healthy pastured, grass fed proteins, we may not see the results we desire. We may see a stall in fat loss, muscle gain, or energy. If we do not get enough sleep, which many of us suffer from, we will also have slower progress in our program. Stress is dis-ease. It may lead to disease.
We need to promise ourselves the small personal luxury of QUIET time. It can be meditation for a few minutes, even in your car will suffice. Breathe in and out through the nose slowly and count to ten and back to one. Do this a few times and the minutes will pass. Close your eyes. Perhaps classical or acoustic music will help.
We need to promise ourselves the small personal luxury of a walk outside in nature. Look at the horizon, feel the wind, listen to the trees moving, the leaves rustling, and sense the satisfying internal heat building as we find our natural stride. We are connected to everything and everyone, but we often forget. The walk releases pleasure hormones and reduces stress. You deserve it!
What do you do to relieve your stress? How do you push through your stalls in your wellness goals? I want to hear from you!
