Dr. Seuss and Me #8

Sometimes we need a cheerleader. Dr. Seuss is an enthusiatic cheerleader!

"You're off of Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So...get on your way!

Now, that statement is a positive way to wake up. This morning I could not sleep. Usually I sleep 9-10 hours a night. My body just needs rest. When I began 2017, I decided to engage in a green veggie juice fast. The extra energy my body is not using for digestion, well, I guess I just do not need the sleep right now. I'm working on an elevated level of thinking. I am not restricting calories, and of course I have coffee in the morning. Those of you who know me well know that I love coffee more than any other beverage.

I thoroughly enjoyed my December, enjoying a manhattan or two every evening of my vacation at home. I ate ice cream, the most organic, raw, daily-made, local kind I could get. When January rolled around I started my yearly detox. This year, however, I decided not to put a number or goal on my journey of vegetable juice fasting. I didn't claim to myself or to others on social media, "Come join me on my 30 day juice fast." When I have done that in the past, the number statement, it put pressure on me to be either a success or a failure. This year, I want my journey to flow. I am just going to see how it goes, and when my body tells me I am done, then I will be done. Listening to my body has become easier in my 50s. I am a partner to my body, rather than judging it all of the time. I m practicing self care, rather than sick care.

So, back to the quote. Your mountain is waiting. What that means to me is that we all have goals in life. It may feel like an insurmountable goal, but with every step closer, we can see the goal become attainable. The mountain may be a high, round hill.  When we hike up the mountain, we can see that it was not to far away and high up in the clouds as we first imagined. Heck, I climbed Table Mountain in Capetown, South Africa in 48 minutes one time! Every time I hiked that mountain, I tried to beat my time. The view from the top of the mountain was amazing, but I realized it was not as high as I imagined from below.

Just suiting up and showing up is half the battle. I didn't understand chemistry very well in 10th grade. I showed up every day, memorized the formulas so I wouldn't blow up the lab, asked questions of the teacher and the kids who really got the subject, and got an A in the class. I knew that I would never use chemistry again in my life, but I wanted that A. The only time I use chemistry now is in the kitchen for baking! My point is, asking for help on the way up the mountain is not weak. It is a strength to ask of others who are more knowledgable than you.

I am your cheerleader! I have researched for years the most up to date and relevant data that will help you reach your wellness goals. It begins with the first step on day one, today.

I want to hear from you!

Blessings,
KJ Landis

Marketing for the Creative Individual

When I first heard the word platform coming out of Reid Tracy’s mouth at a writing conference, I thought he was referring to the stage my future self would speak from, or the shoes I would wear to become even taller than my 5-foot 10-inch frame. What ensued that weekend was an education in waters I had never swum in before. The term platform, I learned, was my audience across the World Wide Web in all the forms that it takes.

When writing a book, the first part is the tickling of the creative muse. Then comes the rewriting. Then comes the rewriting. Then comes the rewriting. You get it? “Writing is rewriting,” my husband (a screenwriter) has said many times.

Before the book comes out of the oven, and before it is for sale, we must learn how to market the book. We market the book through many avenues, thus building our platform little by little, or if one already has a fan base of readers from a blog, maybe in larger chunks.

I didn’t even know how to type when I wrote my first book. My children taught me how to do that with elementary school typing games. They also created for me a Facebook page and a Twitter page on line. My cousin, who is younger than me, sat with me for 16 hours and taught me how to create my website. My kids’ friends showed me what a YouTube channel looks like, and how to upload a video. And then my niece came over and said, “It’s all about Instagram and LinkedIn these days.”

“Aaaaagh! This is all so confusing and I am technologically challenged. How am I going to market my works when I just want to help people from my research and from my heart?” I thought.

I began educating myself by listening to podcasts about marketing and authors, when in walked Mailchimp and his buddy Buffer. Those two tools helped me tremendously to simplify my messages to multiple social media and emails directly to friends and family through marketing without sounding like a used car salesman!

So allow me to share my marketing efforts:

-Once a week, I write a blog on my website.
-Once a week, I create a short, helpful video on YouTube related to my books.
-Once a week, I write a newsletter with links to the blog and video and send out through Mailchimp.
-Once a week, I write an email letter campaign highlighting a benefit one will get from reading my works, always with links to my books, and to my social media.
-Once a week, I create short statements of empowerment for my friends and family with photos and hashtags so folks can find me. I use Buffer to schedule up to 10 of them in advance. Buffer staggers when they will send out the image and motivational statements, so I can continue tickling my creative muse.
-Create a professional fan page on Facebook, separate from your personal page, and post to both pages.
-Once a month, or more, I host free wellness workshops at libraries, senior centers, and in private homes. I make it fun, humorous, and hands on. The participants must give me their full name and email in order to participate in the raffle at the end, therefore add to my list of supporters.
-Once every 3 months, I give away my companion workbook in eBook format completely free for 3 days on Amazon.com. This is available as a promotion through Amazon.com only, not Balbao Press.

Remember, if you touch and change one life for the better with your writing, the energy is exponential in nature. And that is fulfilling for me.

Blessings,
KJ Landis

Dr. Seuss wrote, "Things may happen and often do to people as brainy and footsy as you."

What comes to mind when I read that is: Sassy! Confident! Cheeky! Bold! A real go-getter! Wow! A person who puts their words into action is footsy. Also coming to mind is: Use the brain that God gave you. Do not waste your intelligence, creativity, imagination, emotions, analytical strategizing, problem solving skills...

We often look up to athletes in our society as heroes, and rightly so. From meager beginnings, they had a dream or just an unmistakable talent that they or someone close to them witnessed, and then cultivated into something greater than anybody would have believed at the beginning. Look at the marathoners from third world countries! They run barefoot for years as children. Look at soccer players and baseball players from the ghettos around the world, kicking around rubber band balls, crumbled wads of paper, and hitting those balls with splintered sticks or scrap wood.

When I watched the Olympics this past summer, I was not watching the actual sport for the most part. I was riveted to the stories told by the news reporters about the early lives of the athletes. Now that was inspiring and motivating to me to continue my research and share my heart and facts with you.

By night I am a server, called a waitress by some folks, in a hotel restaurant. Does that define who I am? I can share my brain and my bliss as I wait tables. Relationships are cultivated for the hour or so that I am serving up food and food for thought. What a blessing to me! I meet folks from all over the world from every profession. I see business people and families on vacation. I can use my brain and learn from them as they dine. Brainy also means seeking out an education in the areas that interest me. If I cannot afford another university degree, I hit up the library (almost every day). There are on line courses that are certified and available for free. "Use it or lose it" also applies to the brain!

Then there is the footsy part. Okay, so what are you going to do with all of those big brains? Sometimes learning for learning's sake is satisfactory. That is great. For some, footsy means actively seeking out the next learning experience, the lecture, book, seminar, workshop, class, radio show, podcast, or more. For others, they are antsy to move in a way that takes the brainy part into sharing or career shifts, writing, singing, composing, acting, researching, moving forward in a direction that serves the world while serving their thirst for knowledge.

It's all good. I want to hear from you!

Blessings,
KJ Landis

Sometimes songs from my childhood radio pop into my head when I am reading Dr.Seuss quotes. Let's see if you are with me on this one!

"If things start happening, don't worry, don't stew, just go right along and you'll start happening too."

The song that popped into my head was Creedence Clearwater Revival's, Rolling on the River from 1969. So many artists have covered that song over the years, and it keeps being sung at musical talent shows like on American Idol, America's Got Talent, and The Voice. It must have staying power! The song is actually named Proud Mary, but is commonly called by the chorus of the song.

This quote means to me that if we are on our right path, it just feels right. If I am filling my body with lots of water, nutrient dense foods, and grain free, sugar free options to junk food, I will roll right by the fast food and convenience stores, after a while, that is. Natural habits sometimes take unnatural amounts of effort! Rolling, rolling, rolling, takes time and repetition in our action to become a habit.

Things start happening with repetition and paying attention to your intentions. I have written in my books that there are actual studies showing new nueral pathways are created in the brain when we write down and repeat our goals aloud as if they are happening now. I am...is way more potent than I want... Click here to view my books.

This is a new month and a new year. It feels fresh, doesn't it? With attention to your intentions, you will begin to change your belief systems, and then the life you want and deserve will begin to have actions naturally occur that model the affirmative statements. Yes, you will start happening as those things start happening. If you move, eat, play, rest, and laugh as if you are the happy and healthy person you desire, it will occur. I am not saying that you are immune to pain, accidents, death or cancer, but the general hum will be like bees buzzing outside your window on a bright sunny day, extracting pollen to make honey. It's just what they do. So, don't stew or worry unneccesarily. Trust your process and your decision making.

Folks will begin to see you in a new light too. What unique fingerprint will you leave upon this earth? What is your legacy? If you finally found food freedom and improved wellness, you could free your mind and efforts on what you really wanted to do with the short time you are here on earth!

I want to hear from you! What are your deepest dreams and desires, aside from the eating healthy and being healthy?

Blessings,
KJ Landis

Here is one to think about! The Dr. Seuss quote for now is:

"Think left and think right and think low and think high.Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try!"

I love brainstorming! I love making lists! The subject or theme is given, and away my imagination goes! I love planning the day or vacations with lists. It is so satisfying to cross the tasks and the activities off as we acquire the memories and things. It is always a joy to be creative.

Some of you may think I'm off my rocker. You are not a planner, do everything last minute, and are spontaneous. Well, that is creative too! You must think on your feet, as the saying goes. Keep your head in the clouds or push on through! Whatever floats your boat to get the creative imaginative mind going is a gift.

I truly believe our dreams are a way to have creative consciousness and creative subconsciousness simultaneously! When I was a child of about seven or eight years old, I repeatedly had dreams of being in a black innertube relaxing in a lake on a hot summer day. There was a phone in my hand without wires and I was talking to my friends and family on the phone. At that time there weren't any sort of cell phones. There weren't even cordless home phones either. I honestly believe that if I had that dream, then lots of folks had the same or similar dreams and together we placed ideas collectively into being. Then some brilliant scientists and engineers picked up on the collective consciouness and Whaaa-laaa! We had the invention of cordless and cell phones.

What magnificent things do you think of? I want to hear from you!

"Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is you-er than you."

Well, my friends, it seems pretty simple and laid out in plain fun, silly English in the above Dr. Seuss quote. Have you ever spent time in the mirror, but not getting ready for school, work, or an event? My Aunt Bobbie used to tell us kids to go into the bathroom and turn off all of the lights. It was a small bathroom without any windows. She guided us to stare at ourselves in complete silence and darkness for about ten minutes. She told us kids that this was a way to see the aura, the electrical energy surrounding your body, especially apparent in the head and neck because those body parts weren't covered with clothing. We cousins, aged 4-10 at that time, took turns doing just so. In the pitch black silence we became less afraid of the dark, less afraid of ourselves. We could actually see colors around eachother!

What a gift my late Aunt Bobbie gave us! She was so spiritual, and a thirsty sponge for learning everything about God, religions, philosophy, quantum physics, angels, aliens, ancient texts, and healing with crystals. Her bedroom walls were floor to ceiling hand crafted bookshelves with the most books I had ever seen outside of a library. Some were even banned from the schools! We felt so underground and progressive as we ran our hands up and down the bookshelves, rubbing the books with our fingertips like we were playing instruments. Then we would land our hands upon just one, the right one for the day.

Aunt Bobbie would hold court on her giant, California-king sized canopy bed, surrounded with colorful tapestries. We cousins sat or layed around her in a circle, sometimes 10 children or more. She would tell us to close our eyes and ruffle through the pages and stop on the one page that felt right to us that day. Then, one by one, we would read it aloud to her, that one page. Aunt Bobbie would sermonize and explain lovingly the deep meaning behind the big words and the messages held therin. She was my favorite aunt, for many reasons which I will go into later, as the Dr. Seuss quotes unlock my memories.

Aunt Bobbie used to say that if we are all from God, and God is love, then we are all love. So there are no real conflicts or differences between the religions or the sciences. They are all extensions of love and from God. She always encouraged me to look deeper, deeper, deeper. She also said repeatedly during my childhood and young adulthood that whatever I touched would turn to gold. Here I am years and years later, and just now I am connecting the repeated phrase to my son's name Golden.

So, to close, there is no one alive you-er than you! Rejoice in your uniqueness. Celebrate your Bohemian ways. We are all blessings and so, so special. We are all worthy and a reflection of the best there is!

Blessings,
KJ Landis

This Dr. Seuss quote may leave some of us readers timid to let down our wall:

"Be who you are and say what you feel. Remember to always be you-be real."

My nickname at home is L-L-L, which means Loose Lips Landis! My husband gave me this name because good or bad, I am most likely to answer any question someone asks me. Even if they just met me, and they ask a personal question, I am more than likely to give my answer. My truth is based upon my experiences and my feelings. So is it with anybody.

There is a sweet and gentle way to be yourself while saying what you feel. In order not to come off as an asshole, a tattle tale, or insensitive, breathe ten times slowly before answering a tender question. I sometimes blurt out personal details about my bodily functions, my relationship, or my coworkers without doing just so. Nobody's perfect! I am learning patience, especially at the restaurant where I work.

The whole point of sharing what we really mean and who we really are in life is to open up to the possibility that folks do want to know and love the real you. Masks don't work in long lasting relationships. Eventually, when the mask falls off, and the walls break down, all that is left is your brilliant self. Own it. You are a gem, the good parts and bad parts are a work in progress. It's all good. If folks do not want to be around thereal you, they will eventually fade away as you peel off the layers.

So, now I ask you to be bold and share with the world what you really think and feel. You are only here for a short time. Don't your friends and family deserve to get to know the true you before you die? I am not trying to be all doom and gloom, but I could get hit by a bus as I cross the street to put the letter into the mailbox. Eternity on earth is not promised.

I want to hear from you!

Blessings,
KJ Landis

Here is another quote from Dr. Seuss and how it relates to the rest of us:

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose."

Unless born ill, or with chronic conditions, most of us have brains and feet. I never thought of my work in this way, but most of my work deals with research in helping folks with the mental/emotional side of health, or the physical side of health! Those are in alignment with the quote, the feet and the brains! Just move it, move it, move it! I do not care what exercises you partake in, but the body and brain benefit in a myriad of ways with daily movement. Exercising the brain is so important as well. Daily reading, researching, puzzles, lectures, and learning from others is paramount to working the control center of the body.

"Use it or lose it." We have all heard this cliche. It is true. Even folks with signs of early dementia can benefit from games, social interaction, bingo, regular religious or meditative activity. The body can benefit from simple acts of movement that do not cost a thing! You do not have to join a gym if you are on a limited income. How about a walk outside in nature? Want to reisitance train for free? Walk up hill. Do push ups. Even the simple plank pose will work your whole body. There are free exercise tutorials ranging from 5 minutes to 90 minutes on the TV or web.

Steer yourself in the direction you choose to live. I, myself am researching everything I can on early Alzheimer's disease because my parents both have had the disease, and my father passed away from it about a year and a half ago. Knowing the signs ahead of time, speaking with my doctor, and practicing preventive measures can help me live the sort of life I want to live!

What are your thought on the above quote? I want to hear from you!

Musing on Dr. Seuss

I was attracted to a book during my Christmas and Chanukah shopping at the back of a Walgreens drug store, of all places! I picked it up, and it was titled, 100 Notes, by Dr. Seuss. Inside was one colorful phrase and illustration per page. Brilliant idea! There were little dot stickers so the reader could tear out a page if desired and leave out for motivation, or for a laugh. The reader could secretly leave the page for a friend, famly, or coworker. The point was to make someone's day! I love the idea.

Right then and there I impulsively bought the book and decided to blog about the phrases here. I know it isn't nutrition sciene, but my work is nutrition science and the power of reaching for our higher power to live our best life ever, whatever that looks like for the individual. When we feel good, we make healthier choices in all areas of our lives. When we make healthier choices in our lives, we have hormonal, emotional, and physical blending that seems to be a flow. I want to flow!! don't you?

Here is the quote of the day from Dr. Seuss:

"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."

You have to be your own champions, my friends. "Toot your own horn," my mother used to say. If you do not persevere and show how awesome you are, care enough to do your very best, nobody will give you the time and attention you deserve. Now, this is by no means a permission slip for bragging, boasting, and flat out being full of yourself. It is a different kind of being full of yourself. Be so naturally and completely full of your deepest self, followed up by action and attention to your intentions, that folks have to sit up and take notice. We all know and feel instinctively when someone walks into a party and all eyes turn to them. There is an energy, a humming just under the surface that exudes confidence and love, self esteem intact, self worth and self love exuding from every pore. They may not be beautiful, but they are...fully present and joyful. We all have experienced this at some point in our lives.

Have you ever thought that you are that person who cares a whole awful lot, so much that you glow, so much that you can change the world?

I want to hear from you!

Blessings,
KJ Landis

Life is Like Yoga

Picture
When I go to Bikram hot yoga class, there are many teachers, and they rotate. I am happy to experience a new teacher becasue I never know what details of the same 26 postures I will focus on that particular day. Some teachers are like the general, barking out orders exactly when I need a push becasue I have been too comfortable in the pose and not giving it my all. Other teachers give gems of wisdom in between the poses, such sparkling words that resonate with me. I want to rush away and write down everything they said. Sometimes I silently repeat in my head a few choice words so I will remember them after class to meditate and write about. Sometimes I imagine being a yoga teacher, imparting words of guidance as well as a physical ass-kicking for 90 minutes!

Life is like yoga. What we put into it, we get out of it. Do not be timid with your life, becasue it will be over before you know it. If we want strength, then we must find strength in our own muscles. If we want mental strength and emotional strength, we have the opportunity to look deep within, with prayer, silence, nature walks, meditation, and we can seek out others who model the life we want. I have done just that. I love being around the folks who look like the strong warriors I want to emulate, while honoring my limitations.

In yoga, I must yield to the pain, to my own current limitations, while knowing that I will eventually, with practice, get stronger and more flexible. Every day in yoga is different, because we humans are different every day. What we eat, drink, think, and move like affects the body, mind, and emotions the next day. It is that way with our whole life too. If we have a stressful day at work, eat junk food, and drink a manhattan after work, we may not feel so great and rambunctious the next day. We may feel like laying low. Our hormones may be affected, and out of balance. Being gentle with the current state of who we are is important, while at the same time striving to be our best versions of ourselves. I call this being my superior self. What I put into myself, I get out of myself!

This is true for yoga, for work, for relationships, for things unseen, but felt nevertheless. It is not easy, but we are worth every effort.

What do you do to truly know and honor your efforts are where you want them to be? I want to hear from you!

The Message from the Donut Hole

1/2/2017

Picture
When kids get their report cards, Krispy Kreme rewards their As with donuts. Just go to any store with your report card and show them. One free donut for every A! Now, what does this have to do with health and wellness? Why is the sugar free and grain free queen telling you all this? Well, the other day, my daughter wanted to buy her daddy donuts with her report card for Christmans and Chanukah. His favorite dessert is a donut. She didn't have any money so she took her brother's report card off of the refrigrator and said, "I will use his." Figuring our the way to success in her endeavor was paramount in the life lesson. Golden and Sage are unisex names, so she was creative. She was confident. When her own report card arrives, she will give it to her brother to use for free donuts if he likes.

My close friend Suzette was visiting us from New York City during this adventure. She and I looked at the donuts for a few long pauses. I said aloud, "Why is it that without the hole in the middle, a donut just becomes a fried pastry or cake? The hole, the emptiness, is what makes it a donut. That concept is just crazy."

Suzette is a practicing Buddhist. She shared with me that the emptiness in the hole is where we are all trying to get to in life. If we can flow with the activities and not react so strongly that we continue to suffer daily, well, that is meditation. The hole, the emptiness, is a great vacation from all of the emotions in life. Everything and nothing is found in the hole of the donut. The space surrounded by the stuff is where we really get it.

Where do you go and what do you do in your daily life that creates within you a minute of nothingness? What does that look like? What does that feel like? I want to hear from you!

Blessings,
KJ Landis
